Scope

Aims, scope and focus

Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society is published by John Wiley and Sons Ltd and is in Zone 3 of Mathematics in the CAS Journal Ranking (2025 upgraded edition). By OpenAlex counts of its recent articles, its largest topics are Mathematics and Applications, Advanced Topics in Algebra and Algebraic Geometry and Number Theory, together about 21.4% of its articles. Its main subfields are Geometry and Topology and Mathematical Physics. (generated from OpenAlex topic counts and CAS ranking data)

The Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society has been publishing leading research in a broad range of mathematical subject areas since 1969. Research articles accepted by the Bulletin are of high quality and well written, with a maximum length of 20 pages. The Bulletin also publishes authoritative survey articles (of any length) and obituaries of distinguished mathematicians. As a journal covering a broad range of mathematics, the Bulletin expects all papers to have a motivating introduction which sets the work in context and can be understood and appreciated by researchers outside the immediate specialism of the paper. The extent to which the introduction achieves this forms part of the acceptance criteria for the Bulletin. We fully recognise that the main body of most mathematics papers written today are primarily read by subject specialists. The Bulletin welcomes short papers on subjects of general interest that represent a significant advance in mathematical knowledge as well as submissions that are deemed to stimulate new interest and research activity. The Bulletin shares an Editorial Board with the Journal of the London Mathematical Society. The Journal publishes longer research articles. Both journals employ the same high standard of peer review. A list of the current Editorial Board members and their specialist interests may be found here. The Bulletin is wholly owned and managed by the London Mathematical Society, a not-for-profit Charity registered with the UK Charity Commission. All surplus income from its publishing programme is used to support mathematicians and mathematics research in the form of research grants, conference grants, prizes, initiatives for early career researchers, and the promotion of mathematics.
