Aims, scope and focus
Bioprocess and Biosystems Engineering is published by Springer Berlin Heidelberg and is in Zone 3 of Biology in the CAS Journal Ranking (2025 upgraded edition). By OpenAlex counts of its recent articles, its largest topics are Microbial Metabolic Engineering and Bioproduction, Biofuel production and bioconversion and Enzyme Catalysis and Immobilization, together about 39.2% of its articles. Its main subfields are Molecular Biology. (generated from OpenAlex topic counts and CAS ranking data)
Bioprocess and Biosystems Engineering journal provides an international peer-reviewed forum to facilitate the interactions between engineering and life sciences to find efficient solutions to the development and improvement of bioprocesses. The primary aim of the journal is to draw more attention to multidisciplinary approaches for integrative bioprocess design. The journal publishes following article types: Research, Perspectives, Brief-Report and Reviews. Reviews are regarded as Critical Reviews and they should not only provide a concise overview of the latest developments in a particular field, but also offer conceptual insights, highlight knowledge gaps and point to future perspectives. Areas of interest include:
· Bioprocess engineering
· Biosystems engineering
· Biochemical engineering
· Biotechnology
· Biocatalysis and applied enzymology
· Bioelectrochemical engineering
· Cell engineering and applied microbiology
· Life-science engineering at the interface of biology and medicine
· Metabolic engineering
· Applied synthetic biology
· Systems biology
· Tissue engineering
· AI and data science for bioprocess engineering
· Process instrumentation, modeling and advanced controls Of special interest are the rational manipulation of biosystems, for example through genetic engineering techniques, to provide new biocatalysts, and the model-based design of bioprocesses (upstream processing, bioreactor operation, and downstream processing) that lead to new and sustainable production processes. Contributions are targeted at new approaches for rational and evolutive design of cellular systems by taking into account the environment and constraints of technical production processes, using recombinant DNA-technology and process design, as well as new hybrid intersections such as bioinformatics and process systems engineering. Manuscripts concerning the design, simulation, experimental validation, control, and economic as well as ecological evaluation of novel processes using biosystems or parts thereof (e.g., enzymes, microorganisms, mammalian cells, plant cells, or tissue), and their related products, or technical devices are also encouraged. Studies on biodegradation, biosorption, and bioactive nanomaterials are welcome if they demonstrate clear methodological innovation and provide quantitative, mechanism-based findings beyond descriptive performance data. The Editors will consider papers for publication based on novelty, their impact on biotechnological product
