U SCindeksu se referišu naučni časopisi koji se publikuju u Srbiji i drugim zemljama koje pripadaju istom geografskom i jezičkom (južnoslovenskom), pa utoliko i istom naučnom prostoru. Prihvaćeni časopisi se indeksiraju sistematski, "od korica do korica". Pored naslova i sažetaka radova, metapodatke u SCIndeksu čine i sve citirane reference. Metapodaci su dati u OAI PMH Dublin Core formatu kako bi se uvećala njihova interoperabilnost s drugim bibliografskim bazama i na taj način propagirala njihova vidljivost na vebu. U repozitorijumu SCIndeksa takođe se čuvaju puni tekstovi članaka objavljenih u indeksiranim časopisima. Većina časopisa se uređuje na onlajn platformi SCIndeksa, nazvanoj SCIndeks Asistent. Celokupan sadržaj SCIndeksa dostupan je na internetu u režimu tzv. dijamantskog otvorenog pristupa.
