Actualmente es un fórum plenamente internacional para publicar investigaciones en todos los aspectos de la ornitología. Son bienvenidos por tanto estudios dentro de las disciplinas de la biología básica, ecología, comportamiento, conservación y biogeografía, especialmente aquellos desarrollados de acuerdo a un marco de comprobación de hipótesis. Tenemos una larga tradición en publicar estudios de ámbitos mediterráneo y neotropical, pero aceptamos también manuscritos desarrollados en otras partes del planeta.Ardeola se publica semestralmente (en enero y julio, un volumen por año). El cuerpo principal de la revista lo componen artículos (Papers y Review articles) y notas breves (Short Communications) de carácter metodológico o sobre resultados provocativos. El idioma de publicación es el inglés, con resúmenes y pies de figura y tablas también en castellano. Ardeola también publica revisiones críticas de libros (Book Reviews) y resúmenes de tesis sobre aves y sus hábitats defendidas en universidades españolas (PhD-Dissertation Summaries). Además, se publica, en español, el Noticiario Ornitológico (sobre observaciones significativas de aves en España) y Observación de Aves Raras en España (el informe del Comité de Rarezas de la Sociedad Española de Ornitología).
