„Archeologia Polski” to jedno z wiodących czasopism archeologicznych w Polsce, o wieloletniej tradycji. Publikowane materiały obejmują szeroki zakres tematyczny i chronologiczny. Tematyka i charakter publikacji: ukazujące się artykuły mają głównie charakter analityczno-syntetyczny i przekrojowy, dotycząc różnorodnych przejawów działalności człowieka w przeszłości, odkrywanych i rejestrowanych w postaci źródeł archeologicznych. To także studia na wybranymi, węższymi problemami dawnych społeczeństw. W centrum rozważań są wielorakie zagadnienia, zwłaszcza: osadnicze, środowiskowe, gospodarcze, produkcyjne, wymiany towarowo-pieniężnej, budownictwa, sztuki wojskowej, sfery duchowej, szeroko pojętej konsumpcji. Część artykułów poświęcona jest metodyce i metodologii badań archeologicznych. Mają one na celu propagowanie nowoczesnych technik badawczych z zakresu nauk ścisłych i ich zastosowanie w lepszym poznaniu oraz interpretacji analizowanych reliktów, zabytków i zjawisk. Korzystając z możliwości, jakich dostarczają archeologii odmienne dziedziny, autorzy tych prac udowadniają celowość interdyscyplinarności badań. Integralną częścią periodyku jest też rozbudowany dział krytyki naukowej z polemikami i dyskusjami oraz obszernymi recenzjami, zwłaszcza z literatury zagranicznej. Zawartość tomów uzupełniają: dział kronikarski oraz artykuły okolicznościowe (zob. Działy czasopisma). Zakres chronologiczny i terytorialny: prezentowane badania dotyczą okresu od epoki kamienia po współczesność. Zasięgiem obejmują głównie ziemie polskie, przy czym rozpatrywane są na europejskim tle porównawczym, na ogół koncentrując się na Europie Centralnej. Mogą dotyczyć również innych krajów naszego kontynentu. Celem obecnego Zespołu redakcyjnego „Archeologii Polski” jest kontynuowanie dotychczasowych wytycznych programowych w zakresie publikowania artykułów przeglądowych, reprezentujących najwyższy poziom merytoryczny. Temu służyć będzie dobór zróżnicowanej problematyki oraz tekstów dotyczących szerokiego spektrum zagadnień z różnych epok. Chcielibyśmy, by pismo umocniło swój wizerunek w środowisku naukowym jako periodyk mieszczący się w aktualnym nurcie badawczym, oraz swój prekursorski charakter, wyznaczając nowe kierunki i przedstawiając nowatorskie metody różnych dyscyplin z archeologią integralnie związanych. Czasopismo jest skierowane przede wszystkim do archeologów, ale także do czytelników zainteresowanych archeologią i jej sposobami poszukiwania odpowiedzi na pytania kluczowe oraz szczegółowe w dziejach cywilizacji, społeczeństw i pojedynczego człowieka poprzez analizę śladów jego aktywności w wielu różnych sferach.
