Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems (ASFS) is a subscription-based, peer reviewed journal devoted to the field of agroecology as the foundation for transformative food systems change. Agroecology is more than new or improved farming practices and on-farm sustainable management of natural resources. It is the ecology of the entire food system, from the field to the table, from the people who grow and process our food to the people who consume it, from urban to rural, from farm policy to food policy, and from local to global. Agroecology has evolved into a broad, transdisciplinary field that integrates science, practice, and the movements leading change in all parts of the food system. We seek understanding and examples of how such change is happening – the core aim of this journal. To this end, ASFS prioritizes scholarship that links scientific inquiry and agricultural practice with transformative social action. Our scope is food-system wide, bridging scales from farm to global and from production to consumption, inclusive of the multiple communities, institutions, and knowledge systems it comprises. We publish articles in the biophysical, social, and inter/transdisciplinary areas. We prioritize co-created and community-led research that embodies the integrative tenets of agroecology, while highlighting new areas and methods of research that defy disciplinary boundaries, and represent systems level thinking. We particularly welcome research and writing from Indigenous scholars and organizers, laborers across the food system, civil society groups, and activist communities of scholarship. We also welcome approaches that are not explicitly “agroecology,” but are complementary with it – especially those grounded in on-farm, participatory, change-oriented, and critical methodologies of sustainability analysis and evaluation. Manuscripts should make clear how the work presented engages with agroecological thought, and how farmers and other food system actors participated in the research, or why such participation was not reasonable. We seldom publish research based primarily on surveys, modeling, laboratory or experiment station studies, or research on sustainability indicators or species distributions that is not participatory or do not provide new insight into agroecology beyond the system studied. The Journal publishes reviews and meta-analysis papers only when they offer novel synthesis that supports agroecological transformation. Diverse methods are wel
