Scope

Aims, scope and focus

Advances in Health Sciences Education is published by Springer Netherlands and is in Zone 2 of Education in the CAS Journal Ranking (2025 upgraded edition, Top journal). (generated from OpenAlex topic counts and CAS ranking data)

Advances in Health Sciences Education (AHSE) is a forum for scholarly and state-of-the art research and scholarship into all aspects of health professions education including (but not limited to) medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, veterinary medicine, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, dentistry, pharmacy, and nutrition. Articles that do not have a strong health professions education focus will not be considered. We publish empirical studies as well as discussions of theoretical issues and practical implications. The primary focus of the Journal though is linking theory to practice; thus, all submissions should engage with theory in some substantive way. Moreover, authors are encouraged to explore their study from multiple theoretical and analytical perspectives, and to include multiple converging studies if possible. Papers should also have some practical relevance for health professions education or health professions education scholarship. This should be made explicit and not left for readers (and editors and reviewers) to infer. The focus of any scientific paper is the research question. In an empirical paper, the literature review should lead to research questions and these questions in turn should set the agenda for the research methods and results. We acknowledge that whether it is called a research question, goal, or hypothesis is a paradigmatic issue. What does matter is that the question is answerable by the study design. This is what characterizes scientific questions. Having posed questions or hypotheses etc., authors should describe how their study has answered them. Studies that do not answer their own research questions will be rejected. Authors also need to demonstrate that their study questions have not been previously addressed and are important for the field. Empirical papers should employ rigorous methodologies, whether quantitative, qualitative, or mixed, and they should provide: 1) a rationale for their methodological orientation, 2) a clear description of the methodology they used, and 3) a clear description of the study design and the steps within. For hybrid methodologies, not only should each methodology be described and justified, the reasons for using variations on a methodology or a combination of methodologies must be provided along with a clear rationale and process for synthesizing findings across different approaches. Studies of a single course or program with weak evidence of effectiveness, such as student ratings,
