Submissions to the JBL should align with the following expectations: Theoretical contribution: Manuscripts should build, test, refine, or apply theory in ways that advance understanding of supply chain phenomena. Theoretical contributions may take multiple forms but should be clearly articulated and tied to the research question and findings. Empirical methods: JBL is an empirical journal. Any quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-method empirical approach is welcome as long as the method fits the research question and the execution meets disciplinary standards. Conceptual research: Conceptual and theory-building manuscripts are appropriate when they sharpen understanding of supply chain processes, mechanisms, or outcomes. Provide supply chain utility: JBL publishes research that advances understanding of how supply chains create and deliver utility (i.e. time, place, form, possession) for customers. Manuscripts should make clear which utility mechanisms are being examined and why they matter. Performance attributes in supply chain context: Research examining efficiency, effectiveness, resilience, or sustainability should do so in ways that illuminate how supply chains create and deliver utility. Studies that pursue these attributes in isolation, without a clear supply chain mechanism or utility linkage, are outside the journal's scope. End-to-end domain, not end-to-end coverage: Research may examine any activities within core supply chain activities of sourcing, operations, and logistics. Studies are not expected to span an entire supply chain, but they should be clearly situated within it. Supply chain contribution: Supply chain content must be substantive rather than incidental. If supply chain is simply the context and the primary contribution is fundamentally about something else, the manuscript is outside the journal's scope. Rigor and fit: Methods should serve the conceptual end. The core test is alignment among the research question, the theoretically grounded causal logic, and empirical evidence. Relevance grounded in real problems: JBL values research grounded in real supply chain challenges, with implications that meaningfully inform decision making. Resonance as an evaluation criterion: Beyond rigor and relevance, JBL values research with staying power. Authors are encouraged to write with resonance in mind by emphasizing recognizability, controllability, generativity, and memorability for at least one primary audience.
