The Journal of Family Research seeks manuscripts that advance scholarly knowledge in family research, primarily in sociology, demography, and population studies. We welcome empirical analyses, methodological innovations, and state-of-the-art reviews, with a particular focus on European and other Western societies, as well as internationally comparative work. Manuscripts should address significant research questions in family science, demonstrate creativity and rigor, contribute meaningfully to existing knowledge, and employ appropriate state-of-the-art methodology. The Journal of Family Research does not review manuscripts that: Lack a clear theoretical focus on family and intimate relationships (with or without children) Treat family characteristics merely as secondary aspects or control variables without theoretical engagement Rely primarily on psychometric designs such as correlating scales without analytical discussion of broader implications for family research Fail to provide sufficient information about data and sampling to assess study quality Do not meet standard requirements for academic writing in terms of structure, clarity, and proper anonymization for double-blind review All submissions undergo double-blind peer review and are evaluated based on quality, innovation, relevance, and alignment with the journal's scope. Research notes The Journal of Family Research welcomes research notes that present new empirical findings without extensive theoretical discussion or literature review. We encourage these brief contributions as they stimulate further research and enable timely dissemination of findings. Research notes undergo the same rigorous double-blind peer review as regular articles, though the editorial team works to expedite the process. Data profiles The Journal of Family Research publishes data profiles that document new datasets or data sources relevant to family research. These articles offer data producers an opportunity to present their work to the research community and establish citable references for their contributions to research infrastructure. Authors should articulate the specific value of the data for family scholarship, highlighting how the source enables investigation of important questions in family demography, family sociology, or related fields.
