Function was created to communicate novel research and insights into the fundamental basis of living systems in health and disease. It aims to publish groundbreaking research findings that integrate data at the levels of genes, cells, and organs to uncover mechanisms and organism-wide functions in response to normal and disease-related stressors. Function aims to be a highly selective journal, publishing major advances that extend physiological mechanisms in the understanding of biology and the changes associated with disease states. Within this mission to unravel physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms, Function welcomes research reports from all areas of physiology, as well as from fields of systems and multi-level / multi-organ integrative biology, computational biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, genomics of cellular signaling and human disease, the impact of the environment on human biology, and studies encompassing a full spectrum of investigation from molecular to organismal biology. Function publishes high caliber original full research articles, but also short focused articles that report an important new observation, based on solid evidence, but without the full exploration required for a full paper. All scientific content published in the journal goes through a comprehensive, quick, and fair review process overseen by experts in the field. Function will also publish invited reviews, editorials and opinion pieces.
